Week 14 #45 Spooky

Several days into our river cruise one of our stops was Bratislava, Slovakia. It has a rich history dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries. It was incorporated into the Hungarian Empire in the 10th century and in 1536 became the capital of Hungary, remaining the capital for 258 years. Early on its name was Pressburg and in 1919 after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the establishment of the Republic of Czechoslovakia, the city was renamed Bratislava (brat=brother; slava=fame/honor). In 1993 Slovakia gained its independence. It is the only capital city in Europe to border two countries, Austria and Hungary. During our walking tour of the old part of the city we discovered this red executioner plaque hanging on the wall of a building right before a narrow lane. Our tour guide told us that it would have been hung to let residents know that a executioner lived on that lane. I think if I had to see this spooky reminder everyday I certainly would have stayed out of trouble!

I have always enjoyed photography, but with encouragemet from family and friends over the past several years I began to realize I really love it! Belonging to this blog and a local digital photo group has challenged me to look at the beauty of the world and to enjoy capturing it with my camera.
